Yep, we are homeschooling! And yep, we are crazy...
Why?
In no particular order of importance:
*We will be homeschooling our sons when they come home from Ethiopia. This will be a great time to foster growth as a family and for us to learn all about our sweet boys. We are excited to start a new life with our new sons and feel there is no better way to form solid relationships than to be together.
*In anticipation of their arrival, we want to be prepared and have a firm foundation of schooling, schedules and routines under our belts. So we have decided to start now.
*Kellan and Ella have significantly fallen behind in reading, math and writing since moving to Oregon. Their class sizes here are nearly double what they were in Colorado at 38 second graders in Kellan's class and 36 Kindergarteners in Ella's class. I'm no expert, but that seems a bit crowded. I know there can be a bit of regression when changing schools and moving across the country, but we feel it is best to work on literacy at home for the time being.
*We've always considered homeschooling, for many reasons, but in the past, I've held a job that would have made it impossible to succeed at being a teacher.
*My job was teaching (adults), but teaching none the less and I loved it. I love my kids and I love teaching them and knowing exactly what they are learning because I am teaching them.
*Brian's schedule is very hectic and his time off falls in the middle of the week when Kellan and Ella would normally be at school. This time that they will have together now is so important to all of us and we are very blessed to be able to have a day or two together each week while homeschooling.
*We are going to have a blast together. Just tonight, we went on an owl hunt after learning about the more than 130 different species of owls and their methods for catching their prey. It was so much fun sneaking around in the dark, trying to find each other.
*Our teaching at home, centers on God's word and His teachings and we honestly couldn't think of a better foundation to build upon. I only pray that they would grow in their faith and in who they are as individuals during this time and then take what they have learned and use it outside of our four walls.
So there you have it.
Oh, and about the whole socialization thing and what if your kids turn out to be weird because they are only around you all of the time and they can't handle other people and conflict and they'll be withdrawn and.....
Have you met our kids? If anything, they are going be better versions of themselves, I'm sure of it!
